Installation, Pump Repairs, and Maintenance Cleaning

What is a lift station?

A lift station is a structure that pumps sewage from a lower elevation to a higher elevation. In particular, where the elevation of the source is not sufficient for gravity flow. They are also used when other systems would lead to excessive excavation and higher construction costs. They are easier to install, and they don’t sacrifice efficiency or functionality.

A lift station has several parts. One main part of the station includes a wastewater treatment receiving well that houses all the components. This could be a dry well or a wet well. This well is equipped with lift pumps, which are the workhorses of the system. It also contains piping, valves, a junction box, and an equipment control panel with an alarm system. All these parts work together to form the functioning lift station.

In a wet well, a submersible pump is used. Types of pumps available include grinder pumps, shredder pumps, no clog ejector pumps, and progressive cavity pumps. Your property and its location determine what type of system you have, and also what type of pump you need.

When you need to install a lift station or do repairs, it is important that you have a professional perform the service who knows how your system should be set up. Lift station repairs can be dangerous. Certain instances even require a confined space protocol. We perform this service in compliance with OSHA laws. Don’t risk your, and your loved ones, safety by trying to perform repairs by yourself. Call us for more information.

What problems can occur?

Like any other type of mechanical system, lift stations can malfunction. Whether they are small problems and easily repaired, or large and time-consuming. Sewage lift stations are by nature a harsh environment. The equipment in this type of pumping station takes a beating over time. The general nature of sanitary raw sewage is corrosive and abrasive for all the equipment contained in it. Regular repairs and replacements are therefore required.

A service call starts with an alarm noise or an alarm light that goes off. This is usually due to the failure of a pump. At this point, you will find that the equipment may be old and worn out. The pump might need to be replaced altogether. To carry out repairs or maintenance, there are many factors to consider and guidelines to follow. Call us to ensure that the right steps are taken to solve the problem. We can diagnose and fix the problem whether it be a repair or installation of a brand new pump.

How to repair my lift station?

If your pump station has failed and needs emergency repairs, call our 24-hour emergency number (260) 489-6021 (Yes, that is our office number! Your call is important, a live person will answer your call 24 hours a day).

Pumping stations fail for many reasons. Because of the abuse they take, it is common for them to need repairs or replacement pumps. The problem could be an electronic control component, a pump or motor failure, a clogged pump, a stuck valve, or many other things.

J&S diagnoses the problem and makes the necessary repairs, whether mechanical or electrical. We work on all types of pumps, including residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal. When you notice the alarm or red light going off on your box outside, call us to schedule your service. If there is a backup and you need emergency service during the night or weekend, call our 24/7 number 260-489-6021.

Don’t let your business or restaurant have revenue loss due to your lift station. We also offer maintenance schedules that can help you stay ahead of system failures. Call for more information.

What is a confined space entry? Why does my service need a confined space entry?

When entering a lift station to do repairs, an important point is that a lift station is considered a confined space. Confined space repairs require specific safety measures. OSHA laws govern confined space entry. They dictate the required safety equipment at the site, the number of workers, their roles, and procedures during entry. In a confined space, there must be at least three men to do the job: an authorized entrant, an authorized attendant, and stand-by safety personnel.

Not every repair requires confined space entry. However, we have included some information to warn you about the dangers associated with this type of work. Confined space entry is not a do-it-yourself activity. Call us to protect yourself from both the physical hazards and legal consequences of a non-permitted confined space entry.

It is important to call a professional because sewage lift station work involves plumbing skills, electrical skills, control experience, structural know-how, and good knowledge of safety practices and rules. Not every company can perform in confined spaces, but we can. Call for information at 260-489-6021.

Lift Station Maintenance

Scheduling regular maintenance is the best way to prevent sewage overflows from a pump station breakdown. It is uncommon for both pumps to fail simultaneously. Typically, one pump fails long before the second. With proper maintenance, the failure is found and corrected long before the second pump fails. This prevents emergency services from occurring. It also prevents possible subsequent sewage spills and emergency shutdowns of your business.

Our maintenance service provides weekly, monthly and annual inspections. We monitor the performance of your pumps, electrical controls, and monitoring systems. The routine inspection often allows us to identify a problem and plan repairs before the pump station is in danger of a total failure. Being proactive and having system checkups can help avoid business closures due to lift station failure. This can help you save money in the long run by avoiding emergency repairs if it goes into total failure. It will also stop you from losing revenues during a potential shutdown due to failure.

Learn more about our scheduled maintenance services and call us. Start taking better care of your lift station equipment. If your system doesn’t work, you can’t work. Avoid emergencies and have peace of mind by calling today.
