Lift Station Cleaning and Maintenance

What regular maintenance does my lift station need?

Like any system frequently used, lift stations require regular maintenance to keep them running, including lift station cleaning. Cleaning is the most common maintenance you will have, along with periodic repairs. Undoubtedly, they suffer a lot of abuse from constant use. Because of this, lift stations often contain ample amounts of debris, trash, and other types of waste that are not supposed to be in them. Sometimes this can be trash that goes down the drain. It can also include grease from cooking, clothing debris flushed, and many other foreign objects.

Objects entering the lift station that should not be there ultimately cause damage. Debris clogged in the pumps strains the pump components over time. This can also lead to the operating floats, which control the pumps, becoming inoperable. They can accumulate layers of grease and build-up that make the pump fail.

To avoid any of these problems, an annual lift station cleaning is recommended. In some cases, a more frequent schedule may be required. This depends on how much abuse the lift station suffers. Generally, apartments, restaurants, retirement homes, and most public use bathrooms are more likely to have lift station issues.

Call if you have questions about your lift station and how often it should be cleaned. Use our online contact form to send inquiries about getting on a schedule with us. This will save you in the long run by avoiding emergency shutdowns.

What does cleaning a lift station look like?

J & S liquid waste will bring specialized equipment to the job site to clean the lift station. This includes multiple technicians, a tanker, and a hydro-jetting machine. First, we will pump out the liquid from your station. Then we will use the jetting machine to spray down the entire station, removing debris and buildup from the walls and pumps. Then we will pump the remaining liquid and debris out of your station. This leaves your station clean and ready to do more work.

Cleaning your lift station and removing the debris and build-up helps prevent any items from getting into your pump and causing it to malfunction. The more often you clean your system, the better chance you have to avoid potential clogs. Watching what you put down the drain can also help avoid pump failures. If foreign items are not put down in the drains and pipes, they will not end up in your lift station. Sometimes, you cannot control what others put down the pipes. In these circumstances, you might find out about it when your alarm is going off. At this point in time, you will have to call for repairs.

Can I get on a schedule?

J&S offers scheduled maintenance based on your needs. We schedule bimonthly, once a month, once a quarter, or once a year. Call us to ask about getting on the calendar for routine maintenance. This will keep your station clean of debris and foreign items. Making the pump last longer.

On your first service, we will get all the buildup and debris cleaned out. After that, we will routinely service it to keep the buildup from coming back and remove any debris introduced since the last cleaning.

How often should I check my lift station?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Each property is unique and requires its own maintenance guidelines. You can think about a few things that will help you decide whether you need a service.

Firstly, upon ownership of a new building, it is recommended that any lift station on-site be evaluated for cleanliness and potential problems. If you have lived in the same house for a long time or are unaware of the last time your lift station was cleaned, now is a good time to take care of it.

Secondly, if you think your station might be dealing with an item or debris that it should not have in it, you should call. If you put items down your pipes and into your lift station that should not be there, it will lead to pump clogs. It is important to avoid doing that, but if it happens, we can help remove the items.

Otherwise, annual inspections are sufficient to keep debris levels down. For large complexes, such as apartments and busy restaurants, a more frequent schedule is recommended. Possibly as few as every three months. Call us to ask about getting on a schedule. We work with you and your specific needs to create a routine that works for you.

When is it too late for regular maintenance?

If it has been a long time since your last cleaning. If you have never had maintenance done, you should call now to get that taken care of. It is not too late until you find yourself in a situation where your system has failed. If you avoid regular maintenance and wait too long, emergencies can occur.

Without cleaning, debris or other solids can accumulate in your station, causing the pumps to stop working. If you have two pumps, the station can still work while we replace the other broken pump. If you avoid servicing the system after one pump fails and the second fails, you will have a total system failure. This will lead to an emergency call to stop sewage spills.

Routine cleaning and maintenance can help prevent emergency shutdowns. Call us before failures occur or if you need emergency help. In addition to cleaning, we can do all the repairs necessary.
